About the Author

Delores Lowe Friedman was born in Bed Stuy, Brooklyn, and attended the New York City public schools. She gained both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Hunter College of the City University of New York. She holds a doctorate from Teachers College, Columbia University. She is a long time educator  having taught in New York City public schools, and as a full professor at the City University of New York.

She began her writing career in non-fiction when as an advocate for literacy and parental involvement, she authored an education column for Essence magazine, and a book entitled Education Handbook for Black Families, published by Doubleday. During her twenty year academic career, her scholarly writings centered on her interest in equity in science education for girls and children of color, and early childhood education. She has written many children’s books featuring Caribbean American and African American children and families, like Ian’s Pet, Trevor From Trinidad, Jenny”s Far Away Family, The Math Bee, and Journey to a Free Town published by Houghton Mifflin. 

Now retired, Delores has returned to her first love: writing fiction for adults. Wildflowers was her debut novel, which won First Prize in the 2021 North Street Book Prize Competition for Hybrid and Self Published Books. The review by Jendi Reiter said, “Delores Lowe Friedman’s Wildflowers is an emotionally rich and intimate novel that follows a decades-long friendship among three Black women in New York City.… This story celebrates the power of women’s bonds, ….The writing was eloquent… Wildflowers would be an excellent book club read. Kirkus called Wildflowers,  “A solid historical novel with engaging characters.”

Delores Lowe Friedman was married to Karl Friedman, her best friend and muse for forty eight years, and they shared a life together for fifty-one years. Her husband, lived to hear the final chapters of her new novel, and asked her to promise to finish it. Here is her promise fulfilled, Tangled Dreams Delores LoweFriedman’s second novel.

Delores lives in Queens, New York.  She has  a son who is a software engineer. In her spare time, she enjoys painting, going to the theater, and cooking.  She makes a mean curry chicken
