Happy Valentines Day!

Here’s the beginning of Chapter 14 of Wildflowers
COLE
Dawn always wakes me. So much of the time it is gray. Today it was yellow. It filled the room, as we lay wrapped in sheets and each other. She looked so beautiful there in my bed, so many shades of cinnamon. I loved looking at her.
I had always felt secure in my aloneness. It was not that I never wanted the encumbrances of a woman. I had had that. Women had moved into my world; brought their plants, suitcases, and pillows; stayed; and then moved on, leaving photos, makeup, assorted undergarments, and memories in drawers where I least expected to find them. I had loved a few, one deeply; felt sorry for some; nursed their wounds; and sent them on. But Camille—I wanted her all the
time and into the future. My passion for her made my skin warm…

This book draws you immediately into the lives of the three central characters, Camille, Saundra and Jewel. The characters are so well developed that I felt that I was in their heads and could really hear their thoughts. Because the author’s use of language is superb, I felt that each character spoke with such true emotion and so clearly that I knew each of them in a very real way. The story of their friendship allowed me to recall my own relationships and how some grow stronger while others weaken and fade as time progresses. I found myself rethinking all of my friendships with women throughout my college years and beyond — just as Camille did during the story.
Also, since the story begins in the 60’s, and that whole decade was so well described in the book, it, too, came alive to me again and brought back my own experiences. This novel is a real page-turner; it is simply a great read!
